As the No.1 Brewer in Wales, S.A. Brain & Co. Ltd are fiercely proud of their Welsh heritage and the fact they remain family owned. Founded in 1882 by Samuel Arthur Brain and his uncle Joseph Benjamin, S.A. Brain & Co. Ltd have been brewing beer in Wales’ capital for more than 135 years.  Today S.A. Brains & Co. Ltd are much more than just a brewery, although brands such as Brains SA and Dark Mild remain as popular now as they were back then, and have evolved into more of a hospitality company with 236 owned and managed Pubs, as well as a coffee retail brand called Coffee #1, boasting more than 100 stores nationwide.  A lot may have changed since 1882, but their values remain the same.

First brewed in 1958 there has been much confusion around the legendary ale’s name ever since. Does it stand for Special Ale? Or Samuel Arthur? Or is it Skull Attack? And to be honest its true meaning is so lost in myth and legend that we aren’t quite sure anymore.  What we do know is that SA has become the toast of the Welsh nation.  The renowned premium bitter ale is copper coloured and has a nutty richness derived from Pale and Crystal malts and three hops; Challenger, Goldings and Fuggles.  The aroma has a hint of spirit which adds to the legendary mystique of this premium cask beer.

SA Gold

SA Gold           4.7%abv 500ml &      30L Keg

The successful younger sister of the legendary SA, SA Gold was first brewed in 2006 and has been a firm favourite ever since.  Gold is a full-flavoured hoppy and refreshing ale brewed with Cascade and Styrian Goldings hops creating citrus aromas and flavours.  A deliciously satisfying and refreshing pint!

SA Dark

Dark 3.5%abv 500ml & 30L Keg

One of the brewery’s most popular and famous beers, Dark was first brewed in the 1920s and is still award winning today.

Crystal, chocolate and brown malts create the smooth treacle coloured beer with a creamy contrasting head.   A velvety smooth pint, Dark has a combination of chocolate, crystal and brown malts providing a clean palate with hints of liquorice and freshly ground coffee.  The recipe, unchanged since the 1920s won the World’s Best Dark Mild at the World Beer Awards in 2011 proving the longevity of Dark.

Reverend James Original

The Rev. James Original                 4.5%abv 500ml             & 30L Keg

Reverend James Gold

The Rev. James Gold   4.1%abv 500ml

The Rev. James Gold was added to the range in 2015 and brewed in the same style as its original counterpart.  It is a crisp, sweet golden ale with fresh fruit flavours that are balanced by an intriguing depth and light malty aroma.

Reverend James Rye

The Rev. James Rye   4.3%abv 500ml

The Rev. James Rye was added to the range in 2015 along with The Rev. James Gold and is also brewed in the same style as the original ale. The Rev. James Rye is a dark, dry and distinctive ale that has a full flavour and bitter finish with unexpected glimpses of citrus and spice.

Brains Black Welsh Stout
